6. OBSERVATIONS (PART 6)

12. DETAILS OF ORGANS INVOLVED (Cont'd)

(e) PANCREAS

Pancreas was involved in 9.84% of total cases of abdominal and pelvic injuries, of which 83.33% cases were due to blunt trauma and 16.67% cases were due to penetrating injuries of the abdomen. Majority of cases (90%) resulting from blunt force impact were due to vehicular accidents. In penetrating trauma category, stab injury and firearm injury accounted for one case each. It was observed that 33.33% of cases of pancreatic injuries were associated with stomach injuries. The incidence of pancreatic injuries is shown in Table-XII(e).

(f) ADRENALS

Adrenals were involved in five cases (4.10%) out of total 122 cases and all were caused by vehicular accidents. Laceration/rupture of adrenals was noticed in four cases and remaining one case showed crush injury. All the five cases had associated kidney injuries. The incidence of adrenal injuries is shown in Table-XII(f).

(g) STOMACH

Stomach was involved in 6.56% of total cases of abdominal and pelvic trauma. Blunt trauma was responsible for 62.50% of cases while penetrating injuries accounted for 37.50% of cases of stomach injuries. Body of stomach (87.50%) and combined front (anterior) with back (posterior) surface (75%) were the most commonly involved as compared to other parts and surfaces of stomach as shown in Table-XII(g). Contusion of stomach wall was noticed in one case (12.50%) while ruptures of stomach wall were found in six cases (75%). One case showed both contusion and laceration injury. All the blunt trauma injuries of the stomach were due to traffic accidents. In penetrating trauma category, stab injury and firearm injury accounted for two cases and one case respectively.

(h) SMALL INTESTINE

Small intestine was involved in 11.47% cases of abdominal and pelvic injuries, as shown in Table-XII(h). Of these cases, 92.86% cases were due to blunt trauma and 7.14% cases were due to penetrating trauma (firearm injury). Laceration of the small bowel was observed in all the fourteen cases. In 13 cases of blunt trauma category, 12 cases were due to automobile accidents and one case was caused by manual beating by hands and legs in a fight case.
